SAN FRANCISCO: Meta-owned WhatsApp is reportedly working on a future update to the app to allow sending “text only once” messages.
Previously, this feature launched with photo and video support.
The feature, which is currently available in WhatsApp’s Android beta, allows users to view a message only once and then dismiss it, reports WABetaInfo.
According to reports, a padlock-style button with a traditional send-message logo may one day allow apps to access this functionality.
With this feature, users do not have to delete information that has been involuntarily shared as it is automatically deleted from the recipient’s phone.
View Once images and videos cannot be forwarded and copied, so View Once text messages cannot be forwarded and copied as well.
WhatsApp currently prohibits screenshots of parts of media if the recipient is using the latest version of the app, but it’s unclear if this protection will extend to text messages.
Earlier this month, the messaging platform also rolled out a new shortcut to dismiss messages on Android beta.
The new shortcuts are placed within the “Manage Storage” section and marked as a space-saving tool.
