105 – Elon Musk’s Twitter data breach: About 5.4 million Twitter users’ data leaked online; Should you worry?

 

New Delhi: About 5.4 million Twitter user records were stolen by an internal flaw and posted online on hacker forums, amidst chaos and Twitter hotline operator Elon Musk’s claims to improve and revolutionize the platform. In addition to the 5.4 million records sold online, his 1.4 million Twitter profiles collected through another Twitter application programming interface (API) have been added. These accounts were allegedly privately shared among a small number of people.

According to Bleeping Computer, the vast amount of data includes scraped public data as well as personal phone numbers and email addresses that are not intended for public use. The story was first published by security expert Chad Loder on his Twitter. He was immediately suspended from service. Data containing personally identifiable information was retrieved in January of this year using a patch to fix a Twitter API vulnerability. The data was collected in December 2021 via a Twitter API vulnerability exposed through the HackerOne bug bounty program, according to a study released on Sunday.

Most of the information was public, including Twitter IDs, names, login names, locations, and confirmed statuses. It also contained personal information such as phone numbers and email addresses. Twitter and Musk have yet to respond to this report.
