BSNL to start 5G services in 2024, says Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw

Bhubaneswar: State-owned BSNL will launch 5G services in 2024, Union Telecom Minister Ashwini Baishnow said Thursday.

BSNL has shortlisted a consortium led by TCS and C-DOT to roll out 4G networks. The consortium will be upgraded to 5G about a year after placing the order under the contract.

“BSNL will launch 5G services in 2024,” Vaishnaw told reporters here.

He was speaking from the sidelines at an event in Orissa to launch Jio and Airtel’s 5G services. Vaishnaw launched the service with Federal Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

“The entire state of Orissa will be covered with 5G services within two years. Today, 5G services have been launched in Bhubaneswar and Kutak,” said the communications minister.

He promised to have 5G service in the state by Jan. 26.

Vaishnaw said the Modi government has allocated Rs 560 crore to strengthen telecommunications connectivity in the state.

“Today, 100 towers have been launched for 4G services covering 100 villages in Orissa,” he said.
